Rowzat al-Khayal is a prose text in the field of Sufism and mystical conduct, composed in 992 A.H. The only known manuscript of this work is preserved in the Suleymaniye Library in Turkey. This text has not previously been introduced in manuscript studies or literary research and can therefore be considered one of the newly identified mystical Persian texts. The present study aims to introduce the manuscript, identify its stylistic features, and determine its position in the development of Persian mystical prose. The research method is descriptive-analytical and based on textual investigation.
The findings indicate that the prose style of Rowzat al-Khayal is influenced by the ornate prose tradition of the ninth and tenth centuries A.H. and is enriched with rhetorical devices such as sajʿ (rhymed prose), paronomasia, alliteration, allusion, and quotations from the Qur’an and Hadith. On the linguistic level, the text is characterized by archaic verbs, syntactic structures influenced by Arabic, long and complex sentences, and extensive use of compound verbs. On the conceptual level, the author emphasizes themes such as annihilation in God (fanā’), trust in God (tawakkul), remembrance of God (dhikr), divine love, contentment, and opposition to the lower self (nafs), thereby creating a didactic-mystical work. The results of the study demonstrate that this manuscript represents a transitional link between the mystical prose of the Timurid period and the early Safavid era and holds significant literary and stylistic value in the history of Persian prose.
