Considering the realm of influential philosophical notions, the concept of hope belongs to human individual and social life. In fact, whenever humankind has encountered suffering, crisis, or tension, the concept of hope has also manifested itself. Therefore, through a historically referential approach to data collection, the present study focuses on the central narratives of the first four chapters of Kalila and Demna from the perspective of the philosophy of hope. It investigates the presence or absence of hope and related concepts in these chapters and analyzes the scope of hopefulness or despair in the characters as a representation of the real world. In this regard, this study relies on the ideas of Gabriel Marcel, the philosopher of hope, to describe and analyze its corpus. According to this study, a dichotomy of despair and optimism is presented in the first chapter, which has transformed the mystery-based “I-Thou” relationship into a problem-based “I-He/She” relationship. We can somehow perceive the second chapter as the author’s attempt to compensate for the prevailing despair of the first chapter. On the other hand, the third chapter depicts an idealized world where hope reaches its fullest expression. At every turning point of the narrative, hope is realized through the characters’ actions and by adopting “I-Thou” relationships. In the final chapter, despite a strong opposition between hope and despair, hope ultimately prevails.
