Objective: Ḥālāt o Sokhanān-e Abū Saʿīd (pre-541 AH) and Asrār al-Tawḥīd fī Maqāmāt al-Shaykh Abī Saʿīd (574 AH) are among the earliest Persian monographs on Sufi masters. Given their precedence and Abū Saʿīd Abū al-Khayr’s central role in Iranian mysticism, their influence on later Persian hagiographies is expected. One such work, Tuḥfat Ahl al-ʿIrfān (700 AH), authored by Shaykh Rūzbihān Baqlī’s grandson, is analyzed here to identify its key structural and thematic borrowings from these earlier biographies.
Methods: This descriptive–analytical, library-based study examines all three works in terms of content and structure. Focusing on Tuḥfat Ahl al-ʿIrfān, it identifies its similarities and borrowings from the two earlier biographies. The study relies on Dr. Javad Nourbakhsh’s edition of Tuḥfat Ahl al-ʿIrfān and Dr. Shafiʿi Kadkani’s editions of Ḥālāt o Sokhanān-e Abū Saʿīd and Asrār al-Tawḥīd.
Results: Comparison reveals that in structural organization, particularly the introduction, Tuḥfat Ahl al-ʿIrfān models itself on both works, especially Ḥālāt o Sokhanān. Conceptual parallels in the introduction are also evident. In thematic ordering and content arrangement, Asrār al-Tawḥīd appears to have greater influence. Furthermore, in narrating many miracles (karāmāt) and anecdotes of Rūzbihān, the author draws—directly or indirectly—on Abū Saʿīd’s hagiographies. These borrowings highlight Abū Saʿīd Abū al-Khayr’s enduring authority and the prominence of his biographies in early eighth-century Fars.
Conclusions: These borrowings highlight Abū Saʿīd Abū al-Khayr’s enduring authority and the prominence of his biographies in early eighth-century Fars.
