Purpose: This study investigates the aesthetic and philosophical dimensions of surrealism in two Iranian novels, Yeklea and her loneliness by Taqi Modarresi and Indigo Island by Fereshteh Sari, using Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theories. It aims to explain the representation of identity crises and modern human loneliness through automatic writing and temporal distortion.
Methodology: To fill the gap in descriptive-only studies of surrealism in Iranian literature, this research explores the link between surrealist forms and ontological themes using a descriptive-analytical approach grounded in psychoanalysis.
Results: The results indicate that surrealism in Yeklea and her loneliness represents the collective unconscious within a mythic structure, framed as a mystical–philosophical allegory. Meanwhile, Indigo Island, by breaking away from linear narrative and objective reality, portrays the fragmented self and the individual unconscious. In both works, language serves as the medium for the flow of the unconscious and for subjective, dreamlike experiences. The surrealist elements in Indigo Island, through imagination, symbolism, and poetic imagery, represent the inability to achieve a personal identity, lived female experience, and the instability of the subject—an interpretation that can be elucidated from a psychoanalytic perspective.
