The treatise ʿArūz, attributed to Muʿīn al-Dīn Shahristānī, is one of the instructional Persian prosody texts composed in the eighth century AH that has not yet been independently introduced or systematically examined. Despite its significance, its position within the tradition of teaching Persian prosody, its relationship with major earlier and contemporary treatises, and its educational and scholarly characteristics have not been adequately clarified. The present study aims to introduce and analyze this treatise and to determine its place in the tradition of teaching Persian prosody by addressing the following question: What is the position of this treatise within the educational tradition of Persian prosody, and how does it relate to its authoritative and contemporary texts? The research adopts a descriptive–analytical approach based on codicological and textual studies. Two extant manuscripts preserved in the Library of the Islamic Consultative Assembly were examined, and their codicological features, structure, attribution, and scholarly content were analyzed. To determine the treatise's scholarly status, its contents were compared with al-Muʿjam fī Maʿāyīr Ashʿār al-ʿAjam as well as two contemporary treatises, ʿArāḍat al-ʿArūḍiyyīn and al-Kāfiyah fī al-ʿArūḍ wa al-Ṣināʿah wa al-Qāfiyah. The findings indicate that, in terms of structure and pedagogical method, the treatise continues the educational tradition established by al-Muʿjam, presenting the principal topics of Persian prosody in a concise, simplified, and practical manner. The treatise therefore constitutes a valuable source for understanding the teaching methods of Persian prosody and the processes of transmission, abridgment, and simplification of prosodic knowledge in the eighth century AH.
