Objective:
This study examines Asrār al-Tawḥīd fī Maqāmāt Shaykh Abū Saʿīd, one of the major works of Persian Sufi literature, to identify, classify, and analyze the various types of karāmāt (saintly miracles) attributed to Shaykh Abū Saʿīd Abū al-Khayr. Although his miraculous deeds have been widely discussed, no comprehensive and systematic classification of these karāmāt has previously been undertaken. This study addresses that gap and offers a clearer understanding of their nature and functions within the text.
Methods:
This research adopts a qualitative approach based on content analysis of mystical texts. The research data were extracted from Asrār al-Tawḥīd, and the analytical process consisted of three stages: identification, categorization, and interpretation. All narratives describing extraordinary acts attributed to the Shaykh were systematically examined and classified according to semantic, thematic, and functional criteria.
Findings and Conclusions:
The findings show that the karāmāt in Asrār al-Tawḥīd can be classified into thirteen major categories. The most frequent category comprises epistemic and inward miracles, highlighting the predominance of intuitive and spiritual dimensions. The analysis demonstrates that karāmāt function not only as accounts of extraordinary events but also as pedagogical and narrative devices that convey mystical knowledge, guide disciples, and affirm the Shaykh’s spiritual authority. This classification fills a significant gap in existing scholarship and provides a systematic framework for understanding the religious and literary functions of saintly miracles in the Khorasanian Sufi tradition.
