Abstract

Purpose: “Tarikh-e Jahanagosha-e Juwayni” is a literary-historical work composed in technical prose, deeply intertwined with themes of sorrow. This emotional undercurrent gives rise to elegiac content within the text. These elegies not only reflect the author’s grief over human mortality but also articulate his anguish toward the destruction of social, religious, and moral values. The study aims to identify the components that generate this elegiac content—including poetic verses, literary devices, and stylistic elements—and to classify the types of elegies present in the work, supported by examples and textual evidence.
Method and Research: This study uses a descriptive-analytical approach, with Tarikh-e Jahanagosha-e Juwayni, as the primary source and library resources for support. The elegies are classified based on Nasrollah Emami’s "Marsiyeh Sarayi dar Adabiyat-e Farsi" (Elegy Writing in Iran). The author examines examples and explores the factors behind the creation of lamentative content.
Findings and Conclusions: The elegiac content in Tarikh-e Jahanagosha, reflects Juvayni’s focus on social values and emotional responses to historical tragedies. Social elegies dominate, mourning urban destruction, loss of life, and familial collapse. Religious elegies address the corruption of faith, persecution of religious leaders, and desecration of sacred symbols. Moral elegies lament the decline of virtues like chivalry and honesty. Stylistic elements such as Arabic phrases, poetic verses, and literary devices (e.g., simile, metaphor, allusion, contrast) shape the lamentative tone. Language, tone, and intertextual relationships effectively convey the author’s grief.
